Detroit Southeastern beat Detroit Central 48-34 on Friday to earn the PSL Division 3/4 championship.
Detroit Southeastern rallied to beat defending champion Detroit Central 48-34 to earn the Detroit Public School League Division 3/4 championship on Friday, Oct. 16, at Detroit Collegiate Preparatory at Northwestern.
Central took an early lead as senior Jus’tyz Tuggle tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior Kenyatta McKeever with 5:40 left in the first quarter. Senior Chace Moore scored the conversion to make the score 8-0.
Southeastern struck back quickly. Senior quarterback Leron Roseboro connected with junior Karon Allen for a 45-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later. The conversion failed to make the score 8-6 Central.
Tuggle found McKeever again for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:51 left in the quarter to increase Central’s lead to 14-6 as the extra point was missed.
Southeastern found the end zone again as Roseboro connected with senior Donald Echols for both a touchdown and conversion pass with 6:07 left in the second quarter to tie the score at 14-14.
Junior De’Shawn Matthews rushed for a 25-yard touchdown with 2:18 left in the half to give Southeastern its first lead at 20-14.
Roseboro found the endzone himself on a four-yard keeper with three seconds left in the half to increase the lead to 26-14 as the conversion failed.
Central was not done. Tuggle returned the kickoff after halftime 76 yards for a touchdown and ran in the conversion to close the score 26-22 Southeastern with 11:46 left in the third quarter.
After Southeastern sophomore Terrance Hayes stripped Tuggle of the ball and ran it back to the three-yard line, Matthews found the end zone again with 7:27 left. Roseboro then connected with Echols for the conversion to increase the score 34-22.
Senior Marquise Dancy then returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown to increase the lead to 40-22. Dancy finished with nine tackles in the game.
Matthews scored again on a four-yard run and sophomore Isaiah Clemmons rushed for the conversion to make the score 48-22 with 10:30 left in the fourth.
Matthews finished with 31 carries for 251 yards rushing for Southeastern. Junior Dominic Harris had seven sacks and 13 tackles.
Central added two late touchdowns for the final margin.
McKeever ended with five receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns and Tuggle was 8-for-13 passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns for Central.
Southeastern hosts Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (3-2) on Saturday, Oct. 24 at noon. Central travels to Dearborn Divine Child (1-4) on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
