Detroit Cass Technical quarterback Leeshaun Mumpfield (16) passes against Detroit Mumford on Friday.

Detroit Cass Technical pounded Detroit Mumford 48-0 in a Detroit Public School League Division 1 football matchup with huge league playoff implications on Friday, Oct. 1, at Mumford.

Quarterback Leeshaun Mumpfield opened the scoring for Cass Tech with a 22-yard touchdown run.

Running back Shamar Snow rushed for 16-yard and three-yard touchdown runs to increase the lead to 20-0.

Jason Philpots-Dixon returned a fumble two yards for a touchdown.

Mumfield tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jemeel Gardner. Sean Hodges rushed for a two-yard touchdown to make the score 41-0 at halftime and force a running clock in the second half.

Mumfield added a 42-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Wilson in the third quarter to conclude the scoring.

The win over Mumford also earned the Technicians 50 Michigan High School Athletic Association playoff points and five bonus points to bring its average to 47.367. If the season ended this week, Cass Tech would hold the final playoff spot in Division 1.

Cass Tech is in a battle with Detroit Renaissance to earn a berth in the PSL Division 1 championship game on Oct. 15. Both teams are currently 2-2 in league play.

Renaissance upset Cass Tech on 13-6 on Sept. 18 in a game that saw a single positive COVID-19 test result sideline almost 50 Detroit Cass Tech players and left the Technicians with just 16 players, including six freshman who had never played in a varsity game. Only two were starters.

Cass Tech currently has a game scheduled with Detroit Western International on Friday, Oct. 8. Western has loss all of its games this season by forfeit and would most likely forfeit that game. Cass Tech is possibly looking for a replacement game to play in Week Seven.

Renaissance beat Detroit East English Village 48-0 on Friday. But they host Division 3 No. 1-ranked Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. on Oct. 8.

A loss by Renaissance would give Cass Tech a rematch with King in the PSL Division 1 championship on Oct. 15.

King beat Cass Tech 41-34 on Sept. 10.

Cass Tech defeated King in the 2020 PSL Division 1 championship.
