University of Detroit Jesuit held off Detroit Loyola 33-27 in a Catholic High School League AA Division football matchup on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Hazel Park High School.

   Jesuit improved to 1-0 in league play and 2-3 overall. Loyola fell to 0-1/2-3.

   The win kept Jesuit’s Michigan High School Athletic Association playoff hopes alive.

   Junior Nick Johnson rushed for a two-yard touchdown and senior Xavier Chow kicked the extra point to give the Cubs a 7-0 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

   Senior Keontae Booker scored for Loyola on a 40-yard touchdown run and junior Kendrick Britt kicked the extra point to tie the score at 7-7 with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

   Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game from four yards out

 with 4:04 left in the second quarter to put the Cubs up 13-7.

   Jesuit senior Thomas Rider intercepted a Loyola pass and returned the ball to the nine-yard line.

   Jesuit quarterback Nathan Brown tossed a nine-yard touchdown pass to senior Shawn Smith on the next play to give the Cubs a 19-7 halftime lead.

   Brown connected with Johnson for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Chow kicked the extra point to put the Cubs up 26-7 with 11:06 left in the third quarter.

   Senior Patrick McVeigh rushed for an 11-yard touchdown run and Chow kicked the extra point to give the Cubs a commanding 33-7 lead with 11:25 left in the game.

   Loyola scored three touchdowns late to close the gap to 33-27.

   The Bulldogs got the ball back with 1:05 left in the game but were unable to advance the ball.

    Jesuit travels to Dearborn Divine Child (0-0/3-2) on Friday, Oct. 1 and hosts Warren De La Salle Collegiate (2-0/4-0) on Friday, Oct. 8.
