The Michigan high school football season kicked off with the 15th annual Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University in Detroit.
On Friday, Aug. 30, Birmingham Groves beat Grosse Pointe South 34-21 in the first game. Muskegon pounded Warren De La Salle Collegiate 41-7 in the second game.
On Thursday, Aug. 29, Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice beat Utica Eisenhower 7-0 in the opener. Clinton Township Chippewa Valley downed Saline 35-21 in the nightcap.
There will be two more games on Saturday featuring some of the top teams in the state.
Organized by the Detroit Sports Commission, it is the premier high school football showcase in the Michigan. It was created to provide a unique and memorable experience for players, coaches, fans, cheerleaders, and band members. The event moved from Eastern Michigan University to Wayne State University in 2012. Formerly known as the Big Day Prep Showdown, the event has been recognized as the Outstanding Locally Created Event by the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) for excellence in all aspects, including attendance, marketing, promotion and community presence.
Tickets are available online at detroitsports.org/pkctickets with a portion of the proceeds benefitting each school. One ticket grants admission to both games on that particular day.
Xenith is the main sponsor of the event. The company is improving football through protective and performance gear designed, first and foremost, for athletes.

Birmingham Groves had little trouble beating Grosse Pointe South, 34-21. Groves jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on an 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior Damon Dunbar and a 55-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by senior Ralph Donaldson. Senior Markis Alexander tossed a one-yard touchdown pass to senior Kalab Coleman and Donaldson ran for a five-yard touchdown to expand the lead to 28-0. After a brief South rally, Donaldson sealed with the win with his third touchdown of the game, a two-yard run.

Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice used a dominating defensive effort to beat Utica Eisenhower 7-0. It was the first meeting between the two schools. Cameron Terrill had a hand in four of the Warriors’ eight sacks on the day. Rice limited Eisenower to only 78 total yards in the game. Quarterback Greg Piscopink completed 15 of 22 passes for 141 yards and scored on a seven-yard run with 5:18 left in the second quarter for the lone score of the game.

The Crusaders and Shamrocks will meet for the sixth time ever and the first time since 2001. Reigning MHSAA Division 3 champion King has won three championships in the past four years. Catholic Central, the winner of 10 state championships in its history, was bounced in the district championship round of the 2018 playoffs by West Bloomfield. King returns several offensive weapons, including senior wide receiver Rashawn Williams and senior running back Peny Boone. Williams and Boone, each equipped with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Indiana and Kentucky, have committed to Indiana and Maryland, respectively. In 2019, the Shamrocks will be spearheaded by senior running back/strong safety/outside linebacker Cole Price and senior fullback/linebacker Brendin Yatooma.

The powerhouse Technicians will clash with Illinois power Wildcats. Cass Tech, led by Thomas Wilcher, has won three MHSAA titles since 2011 (the last in 2016). Meanwhile, Wendell Phillips, led by Troy McAllister, has won two state titles in the past three years. The Technicians will look to bounce back from a disappointing 41-14 loss in the Division 1 district championship round to Dearborn Fordson a year ago. It broke the Technicians' streak of eight consecutive seasons of at least making the state semifinal round of the playoffs. The Technicians field a new quarterback, senior Sebastian Brown, who replaces Jalen Graham, who will be playing at Purdue in the fall.

Defending Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 champion Clinton Township Chippewa Valley rolled to a 35-21 victory over Saline. Quarterback Josh Kulka completed 12 of 13 passes for 147 yards. Running back Myren Harris finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Carde Johnson returned a kickoff 78 yards for Chippewa Valley’s first touchdown.
